As anyone who sits near me in classes can see, I am on Craigslist way too much. I check Craigslist the way some check their Facebook. However, I know to stick to my $10,000 budget I am going to have to find all the deals I can. Interestingly enough though, after obsessively checking for over six months, I have only found two things so far. My first item was my trailer which I was lucky enough to get for $1,000, including customizations. The second item I found last weekend; the front door. It's actually been surprisingly difficult and almost frustrating using Craigslist because I have found so many deals that have fell through at the last minute. I've learned not to talk about them for fear of jinxing myself. But the point of this post is to talk about carpe deal, or seizing the deal, and showing off my door.
The add was for an exterior wood door(oak) and the asking price was $50. I set up a meeting and ended up buying the door the next day. The woman I bought it from was actually building a studio in her back yard(a little larger than my TinyHouse) with her husband and this door was a leftover they no longer needed. We talked a little more and I found out they were using Craigslist almost exclusively to get the materials for their build and this was their second year on the project. We had a little connection talking about jumping into a project probably entirely too big for yourself but doing it anyway. Then we went to load the door in my car. Of course though it wouldn't fit in my Pontiac so I had to call in backup and had my mom pick it up the following day with her truck. Thank God for family and trucks. The closer I get to seriously starting the build, the more I realize how much help I am going to need from family and friends and how grateful I am for the help I've already received. I use to hate getting help for everything and wanted to be independent, but now in my ripe old age of 21, I'm letting go of that and not afraid to ask for help.
Anyway, here are some pictures of the door:

So far I've spent $50 on the door, saving me $200 by not buying a new door and hardware. I am going to have to buy more sandpaper tomorrow, paint stripper, and stain though. I still think I'll be saving money overall however. One of the main reasons I've taken on a project like this is because I have the time to; I won't need the door for another 6-7 months. Expect updates on the door over that time.
